1
ואקים יי סטנא על ישראל ואתגרי בדוד לממני ית ישראל:
yshral yth lmmny bdwd wathgry yshral el sTna yy waqym
Satan stood up against Israel, and moved David to take a census of Israel.
2
ואמר דוד ליואב ולרבני עמא אזילו מנו ית ישראל מבירא דשבע ועד פמיאס ואיתיאו לותי ואדע ית סכומהון וית מנינהון:
mnynhwn wyth skwmhwn yth wade lwthy waythyaw pmyas wed dshbe mbyra yshral yth mnw azylw ema wlrbny lywab dwd wamr
David said to Joab and to the princes of the people, “Go, count Israel from Beersheba even to Dan; and bring me word, that I may know how many there are.”

ואמר יואב יוסף יי על עמיה הי כאלין מאה זימנין הלא רבוני מלכא שליט עליהון וכלהון לרבוני לעבדין למה יבעי הדא פתגמא רבוני ולמה יהא לחובא על ישראל:
yshral el lkhwba yha wlmh rbwny pthgma hda ybey lmh lebdyn lrbwny wklhwn elyhwn shlyT mlka rbwny hla zymnyn mah kalyn hy emyh el yy ywsp ywab wamr
Joab said, “May Yahweh make his people a hundred times as many as they are. But, my lord the king, aren’t they all my lord’s servants? Why does my lord require this thing? Why will he be a cause of guilt to Israel?”

ופתגמא דמלכא תקיף על יואב ונפק יואב וטיל בכל ישראל ותב לירושלם:
lyrwshlm wthb yshral bkl wTyl ywab wnpq ywab el thqyp dmlka wpthgma
Nevertheless the king’s word prevailed against Joab. Therefore Joab departed and went throughout all Israel, then came to Jerusalem.

ומסר יואב ית חושבן מנין עמא לדוד והוו כלהון ישראל אלף אלפין ומאה אלפין גבר שלפי סיפא ואנש יהודה ארבעה מאה ושבעין אלפין גבר שלפן סיפא:
sypa shlpn gbr alpyn wshbeyn mah arbeh yhwdh wansh sypa shlpy gbr alpyn wmah alpyn alp yshral klhwn whww ldwd ema mnyn khwshbn yth ywab wmsr
Joab gave the sum of the census of the people to David. All those of Israel were one million one hundred thousand men who drew a sword; and in Judah were four hundred seventy thousand men who drew a sword.

ושבטא לוי ושבטא בנימין לא מנא ארום מרחקא פתגמא דמלכא על יואב:
ywab el dmlka pthgma mrkhqa arwm mna la bnymyn wshbTa lwy wshbTa
But he didn’t count Levi and Benjamin among them, for the king’s word was abominable to Joab.

ובאיש קדם יי על פתגמא הדין ומחא יי ית ישראל:
yshral yth yy wmkha hdyn pthgma el yy qdm wbaysh
God was displeased with this thing; therefore he struck Israel.
8
ואמר דוד קדם יי חבית לחדא על די עבדית ית פתגמא הדין וכדון שבוק כדון ית חובא דעבדך ארום אטפשית עד לחדא:
lkhda ed aTpshyth arwm debdk khwba yth kdwn shbwq wkdwn hdyn pthgma yth ebdyth dy el lkhda khbyth yy qdm dwd wamr
David said to God, “I have sinned greatly, in that I have done this thing. But now put away, I beg you, the iniquity of your servant, for I have done very foolishly.”

ומלל יי עם גד נביא דדוד למימר:
lmymr ddwd nbya gd em yy wmll
Yahweh spoke to Gad, David’s seer, saying,

אזיל ותמליל לדוד למימר כדנן אמר יי חדא מן תלת אנא רמי עלך בחר לך חדא מנהון ואעביד לך:
lk waebyd mnhwn khda lk bkhr elk rmy ana thlth mn khda yy amr kdnn lmymr ldwd wthmlyl azyl
“Go and speak to David, saying, ‘Yahweh says, “I offer you three things. Choose one of them, that I may do it to you.”’”

ואתא גד לדוד ואמר ליה כדנן אמר יי קבל עלך:
elk qbl yy amr kdnn lyh wamr ldwd gd watha
So Gad came to David and said to him, “Yahweh says, ‘Take your choice:

אין תלת שנין כפנא ואין תלת ירחין מפך ושלחי קדם סנאך וסיפא דבעיל דבבך תהא לך למדבקא ואין תלתא יומין קטלין דחרבא מן קדם יי ומותנא בארעא מחבל בכל תחומא דישראל וכדון חמי מה אתיב למשדר יתי פתגמא:
pthgma ythy lmshdr athyb mh khmy wkdwn dyshral thkhwma bkl mkhbl barea wmwthna yy qdm mn dkhrba qTlyn ywmyn thltha wayn lmdbqa lk thha dbbk dbeyl wsypa snak qdm wshlkhy mpk yrkhyn thlth wayn kpna shnyn thlth ayn
either three years of famine; or three months to be consumed before your foes, while the sword of your enemies overtakes you; or else three days of the sword of Yahweh, even pestilence in the land, and Yahweh’s angel destroying throughout all the borders of Israel. Now therefore consider what answer I shall return to him who sent me.’”

ואמר דוד לגד אין אנא בריר ית כפנא יימרון דבית ישראל אוריאיא דדוד מלין עיבורא ולא אכפת ליה אין ימותון עמא בית ישראל בכפנא ואין אנא בריר ית קרבא ולמפך מן קדם סנאה יימרון דבית ישראל דוד גברא ומרי קרבא ולא אכפת ליה אין יפלון עמא בית ישראל קטילין בחרבא הא עיק לי לחדא אתמסר כדון ביד מימרא דיי ארום סגיעין רחמוהי וביד בני אנשא לא אתמסר:
athmsr la ansha bny wbyd rkhmwhy sgyeyn arwm dyy mymra byd kdwn athmsr lkhda ly eyq ha bkhrba qTylyn yshral byth ema yplwn ayn lyh akpth wla qrba wmry gbra dwd yshral dbyth yymrwn snah qdm mn wlmpk qrba yth bryr ana wayn bkpna yshral byth ema ymwthwn ayn lyh akpth wla eybwra mlyn ddwd awryaya yshral dbyth yymrwn kpna yth bryr ana ayn lgd dwd wamr
David said to Gad, “I am in distress. Let me fall, I pray, into Yahweh’s hand, for his mercies are very great. Don’t let me fall into man’s hand.”

ויהב יי מותנא בישראל ונפלו מישראל שבעין אלפין גוברין:
gwbryn alpyn shbeyn myshral wnplw byshral mwthna yy wyhb
So Yahweh sent a pestilence on Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel fell.

ושדר מימרא דיי מלאכא דמותא לירושלם לחבלותה ובחבלותיה אסתכל באפרא דעקדתא דיצחק ביסודא דמדבחא ואדכר קימיה דעם אברהם דקים בטור פולחנא ובית מקדשא דלעיל דתמן נפשת צדיקיא ואוקונין דיעקב דקביע בכורסי יקרא ותב במימריה על בישתא דאמר למעבד ואמר למלאכא מחבלא משתיך מסתיך כדון טול אבישי רבהון מביניהון ופסוק מחתך מן שיר עמא ומלאך שליח מן קדם יי הוה קאם בבית אדרי דארון יבוסאה:
ybwsah darwn adry bbyth qam hwh yy qdm mn shlykh wmlak ema shyr mn mkhthk wpswq mbynyhwn rbhwn abyshy Twl kdwn msthyk mshthyk mkhbla lmlaka wamr lmebd damr byshtha el bmymryh wthb yqra bkwrsy dqbye dyeqb wawqwnyn tsdyqya npshth dthmn dleyl mqdsha wbyth pwlkhna bTwr dqym abrhm dem qymyh wadkr dmdbkha byswda dytskhq deqdtha bapra asthkl wbkhblwthyh lkhblwthh lyrwshlm dmwtha mlaka dyy mymra wshdr
God sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it. As he was about to destroy, Yahweh saw, and he relented of the disaster, and said to the destroying angel, “It is enough. Now withdraw your hand.” Yahweh’s angel was standing by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

וזקף דוד ית עינוהי וחמא ית מלאכא דיי קאם ותליל באוירא בין ארעא ובין שמיא וסיפיה שליפא בידיה רכינא על ירושלם ונפל דוד וספריא וסביא דאסירין ומזרזין בשקיה ואתרכינו על אפיהון:
apyhwn el wathrkynw bshqyh wmzrzyn dasyryn wsbya wsprya dwd wnpl yrwshlm el rkyna bydyh shlypa wsypyh shmya wbyn area byn bawyra wthlyl qam dyy mlaka yth wkhma eynwhy yth dwd wzqp
David lifted up his eyes, and saw Yahweh’s angel standing between earth and the sky, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell on their faces.
17
ואמר דוד קדם יי הלא אנא הוא דאמרית לממני ית עמא ואנא הוא דחבית ואבאשא אבאישית ואלין עמא דאנון הי כענא ביד רעיא מה עבדו יי אלהי תהי כדון מחתך בי ובבית אבא ובעמך לא תהא למותנא:
lmwthna thha la wbemk aba wbbyth by mkhthk kdwn thhy alhy yy ebdw mh reya byd kena hy danwn ema walyn abayshyth wabasha dkhbyth hwa wana ema yth lmmny damryth hwa ana hla yy qdm dwd wamr
David said to God, “Isn’t it I who commanded the people to be counted? It is even I who have sinned and done very wickedly; but these sheep, what have they done? Please let your hand, O Yahweh my God, be against me and against my father’s house; but not against your people, that they should be plagued.”

ומלאך שליח מן קדם יי אמר לגד למימר לדוד די יסק דוד לאקמא מדבחא קדם יי בבית אדרי דארון יבוסאה:
ybwsah darwn adry bbyth yy qdm mdbkha laqma dwd ysq dy ldwd lmymr lgd amr yy qdm mn shlykh wmlak
Then Yahweh’s angel commanded Gad to tell David that David should go up and raise an altar to Yahweh on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

וסליק דוד בפתגמא דגד דמלל בשמא דיי:
dyy bshma dmll dgd bpthgma dwd wslyq
David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spoke in Yahweh’s name.
20
ותב ארון וחמא ית מלאכא וארבעתי בנוי עמיה מטמרן מן קדם מלאכא וארון חביט חטיא:
khTya khbyT warwn mlaka qdm mn mTmrn emyh bnwy warbethy mlaka yth wkhma arwn wthb
Ornan turned back and saw the angel; and his four sons who were with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat.

ואתא דוד עד ארון ואסתכי ארון וחמא ית דוד ונפק מן אדרא וסגיד למלכא על אפוהי על ארעא:
area el apwhy el lmlka wsgyd adra mn wnpq dwd yth wkhma arwn wasthky arwn ed dwd watha
As David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out of the threshing floor, and bowed himself to David with his face to the ground.

ואמר דוד לארון הב לי ית אתר בית אדרא ואבנה ביה מדבחא קדם יי בכסף שלים הב יתיה לי ותתכלי מותנא מעל עמא:
ema mel mwthna wththkly ly ythyh hb shlym bksp yy qdm mdbkha byh wabnh adra byth athr yth ly hb larwn dwd wamr
Then David said to Ornan, “Sell me the place of this threshing floor, that I may build an altar to Yahweh on it. You shall sell it to me for the full price, that the plague may be stopped from afflicting the people.”

ואמר ארון לדוד סב לך ויעבד רבוני מלכא דכשר קדמוהי חמי יהבית תוריא לעלתא וקורקסותא לצלחא לקיסי סדורא וחנטיא למנחתא כולא יהבית:
yhbyth kwla lmnkhtha wkhnTya sdwra lqysy ltslkha wqwrqswtha leltha thwrya yhbyth khmy qdmwhy dkshr mlka rbwny wyebd lk sb ldwd arwn wamr
Ornan said to David, “Take it for yourself, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes. Behold, I give the oxen for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meal offering. I give it all.”

ואמר מלכא דוד לארון לא ארום מזבן אזבון בכסף שלים ארום לא אסב מן דילך לשמא דיי לאסקא עלתא למגן:
lmgn eltha lasqa dyy lshma dylk mn asb la arwm shlym bksp azbwn mzbn arwm la larwn dwd mlka wamr
King David said to Ornan, “No, but I will most certainly buy it for the full price. For I will not take that which is yours for Yahweh, nor offer a burnt offering that costs me nothing.”

ויהב דוד לארון דמין על אתרא סלעין דדהב מתקל שית מאה:
mah shyth mthql ddhb sleyn athra el dmyn larwn dwd wyhb
So David gave to Ornan six hundred shekels of gold by weight for the place.

ובנא תמן דוד מדבחא לשמא דיי ואסיק עלון ונכסת קודשין וצלי קדם יי וקביל צלותיה באשא דנחתת מן שמיא על מדבחא עלתא:
eltha mdbkha el shmya mn dnkhthth basha tslwthyh wqbyl yy qdm wtsly qwdshyn wnksth elwn wasyq dyy lshma mdbkha dwd thmn wbna
David built an altar to Yahweh there, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called on Yahweh; and he answered him from the sky by fire on the altar of burnt offering.
27
ואמר יי למלאכא לחבלא מסתיך ואתיב סיפיה ללידנה לתיקה:
lthyqh llydnh sypyh wathyb msthyk lkhbla lmlaka yy wamr
Then Yahweh commanded the angel, and he put his sword back into its sheath.
28
בעדנא ההיא כד חמא דוד ארום קביל יי צלותיה באדרי ארון יבוסאי ודבח תמן:
thmn wdbkh ybwsay arwn badry tslwthyh yy qbyl arwm dwd khma kd hhya bedna
At that time, when David saw that Yahweh had answered him in the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificed there.
29
ומשכנא דיי דעבד משה במדברא ומדבחא דעלתא בעדנא ההיא במקדשא דבגבעון:
dbgbewn bmqdsha hhya bedna deltha wmdbkha bmdbra mshh debd dyy wmshkna
For Yahweh’s tabernacle, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering, were at that time in the high place at Gibeon.
30
ולא ספיק דוד למיזל קדמוהי למתבע אולפן מן קדם יי ארום אתבהיל מן קדם סיפא דמלאך שליח מן קדם יי:
yy qdm mn shlykh dmlak sypa qdm mn athbhyl arwm yy qdm mn awlpn lmthbe qdmwhy lmyzl dwd spyq wla
But David couldn’t go before it to inquire of God, for he was afraid because of the sword of Yahweh’s angel.
